The One Word That Hit Me Like A Brick
May 23, 2025
“I want to be unassailable.”
This last week I was hearing someone I deeply respect speak about success, and they made the above comment.
“Specifically,” they continued, “I want to be so good at what I do, and deliver value at such a high level that people don’t even hesitate when they are deciding between me and someone else. I want to be unassailable.”
If you are scratching your head wondering what “unassailable” means, you aren’t the only one. It is defined as: “unable to be attacked, questioned, or defeated.”
Way back during the 5th century BC, the brilliant Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu wrote the famous book, The Art of War where he laid out the 13 principles of how to successfully defeat an enemy. And what is one of the most powerful strategies you can use to defeat an opponent?
“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” — The Art of War, Chapter 3
In other words, the best way to win a fight is to create a position of such strength, ability, and obvious advantage that your opponent is deterred from even trying. They can’t imagine winning, and so they go somewhere else.
That’s what it means to subdue the enemy without fighting. And ultimately, that’s what it means to be unassailable.

Can you imagine being so good at what you do…
Can you imagine delivering value so high…
Can you imagine making such a difference in people’s lives…
…That when they think about referring you (or someone else) to a friend, you are unquestionably the obvious choice?
Because when it comes to success and influence… being the obvious choice when people refer you… is an unassailable position.
No matter how hard someone tries, no matter what they say, and no matter what they do, when you are the obvious choice people want to refer… nobody can undermine your success.
So what does it take to become unassailable?
While there are certainly many strategies, as I have studied successful people who have become undisputed masters of their craft, one principle rises above the rest.
And the truth is, its not easy.
Its not pretty.
And most of the time its in-the-trenches hard work.
The answer? Preparation.

The greatest performers, the greatest leaders, and the greatest masters of any particular skill were not born that way.
Rather, they worked bloody hard at it. They took the time to prepare.
Consider these examples:
The Renaissance master Michelangelo didn’t become a famous sculptor, painter, or architect overnight. He spent years apprenticing and carefully studying the human form. Though he certainly had talent, his preparation sharpened his abilities to create era-defining works of art admired to this day.
Simone Biles makes history-defying flips look effortless. But behind every gravity-bending routine are thousands of unseen hours of failed attempts, split-second corrections, and slow, brutal repetitions in the gym.
Fred Rogers — yes, Mister Rogers — spent years carefully crafting every word, every tone, every moment of his iconic television show. His influence didn’t come from charisma alone — it came from decades of preparation that made his empathy unmistakable.
In each case, their excellence wasn’t improvised on the spot. It was prepared.

Which brings me to the key takeaway:
Preparation is the bridge between your current level… and becoming unassailable.
Whether you’re preparing for a pitch, a meeting, a performance, or even just the next conversation that really matters — your preparation shows.
One of my favorite quotes is: “Do it till you get it right, then do it till you can’t get it wrong.”
And the better you prepare, the more obvious your value becomes.
Here are some questions to start with this week:
- Where in your life do you want to become unassailable?
- Who is an example you can study?
- What are they consistently doing that you aren’t?
Pick one area. And this week, lean into it.
Because when you do — when you prepare so deeply that your value becomes obvious — you stop having to convince people. That’s because other people you have served will convince them for you.
And that’s when your influence becomes… unassailable.
