Being Relatable Instead of Remarkable

Have you ever thought: “I’m just like everyone else… how can I stand out?”

If you have, you are not alone.

This last week I was doing a coaching session with a client. We were working on identifying their core story that they want to tell to differentiate themselves from others.

“I’m pretty much the same as most of my competitors…” they said, “I don’t have a story that is amazing like other people.”

Before we had even begun, they looked deflated.

As if there wasn’t even a point to explore their story because there was nothing to find.

I responded, “You don’t have to be remarkable to be relatable.”

Curious he asked, “What do you mean?”

I explained how in their space, most of their competitors try and sell themselves by touting important facts, figures, and achievements.

“That’s all well and good, “ I said, “but the problem is… everyone else in the space is doing the exact same thing. And they don’t stand out. But the moment you tell your story? And its relatable? You have begun to create genuine connection and just made your message rise above the noise from everyone else in a subtle and meaningful way.”

“So, just telling my story… my simple, normal story… is a differentiator?” they asked incredulously.

“In a world where few people tell their story…and instead rely on emotionless numbers and statistics… then even a simple story is king.” I replied.

They understood the point, and as we worked together we soon uncovered some moments in their “ordinary” life that were quite powerful.

Remarkable even.

More importantly, after our session, they had a newfound level of confidence and excitement as they “owned” their story for the first time in their life.

The next day they texted me: “I told my story for the first time today in a client meeting, and the result was completely different. Before when I focused on just numbers… I could tell people were disengaged and bored…but I didn’t know what to do about it. But today when I told my story, I could tell they were paying attention and the feeling in the room was much different.”

Best of all?

“I’m never going back to how I used to do it.”

Whenever you are trying to stand out, how often do you tell your story?

Or, like my client, do you find your self relying on numbers, facts, and achievements instead?

I’ve read that research tells us we are 22 times more likely to remember a story… rather than a fact.

So if the strength of your brand is measured by the ability of someone to describe your value to another person (when you are not in the room)… are they more likely to remember a fact… or a story?

I want to give people every chance to refer me to others, and so when I consistently tell my story… I’ve just increased their ability to share my value with others… by a factor of 22 times.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Facts are forgotten.

Stories are felt and remembered.

When everything is on the line, and you want to stand out compared to others… how are you telling your story?

Like my client, when you tell your story more frequently, you might just find the results to be remarkable.
