Your Favorite Song is Lame

This past week… I had a soul crushing experience.

You’ve probably had this happen to you too.

There is this one song that gets me jazzed up every single time, without fail. But when I shared it with a friend, they listened for a few seconds… and I could tell they weren’t buying it.

It was clear they thought it was the first stop on the Lame Train Express.

I panicked because there is nothing worse than when someone rejects your FAVORITE SONG.

It’s soul crushing.

“No- you gotta keep listening…” I urged.

They gave me a side eye that had more disbelief than an atheist conference.

They kept going… and a minute later… it clicked.

“Okay…” they said with a smile, “I see it… Okay… I get it now…”

But I eagerly waited.

Like the way a little kid stares at his favorite donut through the glass at the donut shop, I watched with anticipation.

Because this song, like my favorite donut, has sprinkles.

And then when the song’s big reveal came… when the sprinkle moment landed… my friend’s eyes widened and they said, “Wow!”

I pumped my fists in the air.

Sweet, sweet vindication.

Almost as sweet as my favorite donut.

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever shared your favorite song and agonized as it took a while for someone to “get it”?

The truth is, sometimes amazing songs open with forgettable beginnings. But how does a song go from “meh” to “amazing”?

The answer may surprise you…but its through consistency.

Any song begins with a theme, even a really simple one, but over time good musicians consistently add more and more layers to bring you on a journey.

Little by little, layer by layer, that simple melody soon transforms into something powerful that you remember… and want to share with others.

What does this have to do with influence and success?

This is the exact same process that happens when you build a personal brand that people want to refer to others.

It may start off simple.

- A normal conversation.

- You remembering their name, and something they like.

- You showing up and delivering above their expectations.

But over time, as you show up again and again…

- A follow up text three weeks later.

- Sending an article that made you think of them.

- Remembering a detail no one else remembered.

Your message is compounded layer by layer until people want to share you and your message with others.

Just like their favorite song.

So if you’ve ever wondered how this plays out in real life…

So this week…

How can you consistently show up for others?

How can you make more personal and intentional moments of connection?

How can you reach out and make a meaningful difference in someone’s life?

Consistent moments of compounding connection makes the difference between someone who is overlooked, versus someone who is unforgettable.

Just like your favorite song, pretty soon people will be raving about you, too.

So, who needs some sprinkles in their life today?

You, and they, deserve it.
